Rainbow trout on a camping stove
A camping stove is how you cook rainbow trout when there is no ember and no foil. One pan, butter, skin-side first. The same fry as at home, less space, more wind. It does not compete with kolbullar over the fire — that dish wants cast iron and pork fat. Here the fish is the main number.
How you do it
Before you leave
Fillet at home if the rules allow you to take fish home. Pack salt, butter in a tub, lemon. Dry the fillet on site — damp fish fries wrong.
The pan
A windbreak. Medium, not a full flame. Skin down, press lightly, turn briefly. Lemon. Eat.
Serving
Crispbread, a cucumber, coffee from a flask. Potatoes in the embers is another page: potatoes in the embers.
Tips
Packing list and the kolbullar link: food by the water. Fire rules are the operator’s, not the right of public access on a fenced pond.
