Waders for put and take

Waders are not a must in put and take, because a lot of fishing is from bank and jetty. But they open more places to fish from and keep you dry and warm, especially in spring and autumn. Pick the right type and they last, and they make a cold spring morning much nicer.

Breathable or neoprene, bootfoot or stockingfoot

Breathable waders are light and comfortable most of the year, and you control warmth with what you wear underneath. Neoprene is warm and cheap, but sweaty when it is mild, so it belongs mostly to cold winter. For most people breathable is the better all-round choice, with warm baselayers when it is chilly.

Bootfoot has the boot built in — quick on and off and nice in the cold. Stockingfoot has a neoprene sock and separate wading boots, which fits better when you walk a lot but means more parts. As a beginner, bootfoot is the simplest way in.

Safety and care

Always buckle the wading belt around the waist. It limits how much water comes in if you fall. Wade carefully, feel with your feet, never deeper than you are happy with. Watch for slip, soft mud and sudden drop-offs. A wading staff helps in current. Let waders dry completely, including the inside, and store them cool and dark. Never pack breathable waders wet. Polarised glasses help you see the bottom where you wade. Rest: clothes and accessories.
