Tackle for put and take

The nice thing about put and take is the low threshold. Stocked rainbow and brown trout usually weigh between half a kilo and two, so you get far with simple tackle in light to medium class. The point is to pick the right size, not to spend the most.

The basic kit

If you start with spin or bait this is enough:

• A light–medium spin rod about 6–8 feet.
• A fixed-spool reel size 1000–2500 with a smooth drag.
• Thin main line and a fluorocarbon leader in clear water.
• Hook, weight and float for the method, plus a few lures or powerbait.

Do not forget what actually lands the fish: a landing net, pliers and something to dispatch the fish with.

Pick by method

Tackle follows the method. Spin and bait share the same rod and reel, which makes them easiest to start with. Fly fishing is its own world with a fly rod, fly reel and a fly line that loads the rod.

Buy wisely
