Västra Skärjen

Västra Skärjen is Nykroppa-Storfors fiskevårdsförening’s put-and-take lake between Nykroppa and Gammelkroppa in Filipstad municipality. The association stocks rainbow trout and Gullspång brown trout. Permits are bought digitally. The association leases many lakes; this page is only Skärjen’s salmonid fishing, not the rest of the area.

Species

The main species is planted rainbow trout. Brown trout is also stocked. Pike, perch and whitefish are mentioned as free by tourist information; they are not the reason for the put-and-take permit. Zander in other lakes in the area does not belong here.

Rainbow trout in a larger forest lake often sit along points, drop-offs and in lee. Brown trout can go deeper. A float tube is mentioned as allowed. The association’s boats can be hired; your own propulsion aids can be banned — read the seller.

Fly fishing, spin fishing and bait fishing

The association calls the lake put and take without a method list on the overview page. Fly fishing and spin fishing are the methods we filter on. Bait fishing is not documented here. One rod per permit is mentioned by Visit Värmland.

At the lake there are according to the association a wind shelter, an accessible jetty, toilets and several barbecue sites. Caravan parking is mentioned separately.

Lures and flies

Small and medium spoons and spinners in silver, copper or orange are a common start. Brown trout can want a deeper retrieve: a heavier spoon or a streamer on a sinking line. On fly: a nymph along the edge, a streamer over depth. The tips are general for the species, not a report from a single day in Skärjen.

Fish a point properly. The lake is large enough that it pays to change place when pressure is high, not every fifth cast.

When they bite

Morning and evening are often best. Stocking happens ongoing according to the association, not after a calendar on this page. Ice and winter fishing follow local terms. Premieres and quotas you read with the seller.

Getting there

The lake sits between Nykroppa and Gammelkroppa, about ten kilometres southeast of Filipstad. The map pin is the named lake Västra Skärjen. Östra Skärjen beside it is another water.

The permit is sold digitally via the association’s page for Västra Skärjen and other waters. Choose the product that applies to Skärjen’s salmonid fishing. Physical sale is also mentioned with agents in Nykroppa and Filipstad.

Rules

Always check the current rules with the permit seller. The permit is personal. Quota, boat hire and what applies to your own boats belong to the association and they change. Crayfish fishing is according to tourist information banned.

The lake is marked as family-friendly with an accessible jetty, toilets, barbecue sites and parking. It is still a large lake — keep an eye out, especially at boat and ice.
