Hooks, weights and floats
It is easy to focus on rod, reel and baits and forget the small kit, but it is often hooks, weights and swivels that decide whether the rig works. Luckily they are cheap and you do not need many sorts. Here we go through what you should have in the bag for put and take.
What you need
For a simple ledger rig four things are enough: hooks in a sensible size, a running sinker, a stop bead and a swivel. If you want to fish a float you add a casting float or a stick float. For spinning you mainly need a swivel between main line and lure.
Keep it simple
You do not need a whole range to get started. A couple of hook sizes, a few running sinkers in different weights, a casting float and a bag of swivels go a long way, and it all fits in a small box. Add as you go when you see what your fishing asks for.
Quality where it counts
Do not skimp on hooks and swivels — they are what hold the fish. A sharp hook of good steel hooks more surely and does not straighten on a strong fish, and a reliable swivel does not twist the line into a mess. Weights and floats can be simple without it showing. Read on about each part under hooks, weights, floats and swivels, or see the whole tackle overview.

FAQ
Which small kit do I need for bait fishing?
Hooks in a sensible size, a running sinker, a stop bead and a swivel are enough for a ledger rig. If you want to fish a float you add a casting float or a stick float.
Does hook size matter?
Yes. For a normal put-and-take rainbow trout, medium hooks fit — not so large that the bait looks wrong, and not so small that they straighten. Match bait and the size of the fish.
Do I need a swivel?
When you spin with a spinner, yes — it stops the line twisting and tangling. For bait fishing and with spoons you often manage without, but a small swivel makes leader changes quicker.
