Muddler Minnow

Few flies are as versatile as Muddler Minnow. The characteristic head of spun and clipped deer hair means it can be fished in every water layer, from the surface down to the bottom, and it imitates everything from a small baitfish to a large insect. That makes it a wise fly to have when you are not quite sure what the fish want.

One fly, many roles

The Muddler’s strength is that it does not imitate a single thing, but works as a meaty mouthful in several situations. Fished fast under the surface it becomes a fleeing baitfish. Fished slowly and deep it resembles a sculpin near the bottom. Killed on the surface it can even be taken as a large insect. That breadth makes it a reliable fly when the fish are fickle, and a good complement to more specialised patterns.

Fish in the right layer

The floating head is the key. If you want to fish near the surface you use a greased, floating leader and strip the fly in small pulls so it swims just under the surface film. If you want down deep you use a sinking line or a longer, heavier leader, and let the head give the fly a soft, swaying gait on the retrieve. Try one layer at a time until you find where the fish are holding, just as you do with other searching flies.

Size and colour

Size 8 to 10 is standard for rainbow trout in put and take. The natural brown-gold colour is the original and works almost always. Keep a darker variant for coloured water. Smaller sizes take cautious fish, larger provoke takes from active fish that want to chase.

When you choose the Muddler

Bring out the Muddler when you want to cover several water layers with the same fly, or when more obvious patterns have not produced a take. If you want to fish it truly near the surface, read more under dry-fly fishing, and for the deeper, active fishing see streamer fishing. More species choices you find under flies for rainbow trout.

FAQ

What does a Muddler Minnow imitate?

Originally a sculpin (a bottom fish), but it works widely: as a small baitfish, as a large insect or simply as a meaty mouthful. The versatility is its strength.

Does it float or sink?

Depends how you fish it. The floating deer-hair head means it can be fished on the surface with a greased leader, or pulled down with a sinking line if you want it deeper.

Which size suits put and take?

Size 8 to 10 is about right for rainbow trout. Smaller sizes work when the fish are cautious, larger when you want to provoke takes from active fish.
