Best lures for Arctic char
Arctic char in put and take is a cold-water fish. It rarely takes the same high, fast search as freshly stocked rainbow trout. This page is the baits – the waters sit on the species page, ice fishing and season under Arctic char fishing.
Open water
| Bait | Size | When |
|---|---|---|
| Spoon | 7–12 g | Slow along the bottom and the thermocline |
| Small spinner | size 1–2 | Shallow after ice-out |
| Pirk | light | Vertically from a boat or through the ice |
Fish deep when the surface is warm. Silver and white show in clear cold water. Red or copper when it is dark or coloured. Not a box full of chartreuse unless you are standing on freshly stocked fish in a small tarn.
Ice
Where the seller allows ice fishing: balance jig, a small pirk and mormyshka, often with a scrap of worm. Judge the ice yourself. The method: ice fishing.

FAQ
What is the best bait for Arctic char in put and take?
On ice: a small balance jig, pirk or mormyshka. In open water: a small spoon fished deep and slow. Arctic char rarely hangs high in warm surface water.
Does PowerBait work on Arctic char?
Rarely as obviously as on rainbow trout. Cold water and depth make vertical baits and spoons more believable. Check whether scented baits are allowed.
The same baits as for brown trout?
Small spoons overlap. Arctic char more often wants a deeper presentation and the ice-fishing box in winter. The brown trout box: lures for brown trout.
